Here are some of the most frequent questions we receive when dealing with plumbing emergencies.  If you have a plumbing emergency in the Cardiff area please get in touch.  Our emergency number is in the footer of the website.

How do I know if my toilet is leaking?

Toilets are one of the most common leaks in the home and can often go undetected if the problem is small, however, a leaky toilet can waste thousands of litres of water, this over the course of a year can cost you hundreds in your water bill.  To check if your toilet is leaking dry all around the toilet and flush it.  Then leave toilet tissue across the back of the pan for 3 hours without further flushing.  If this toilet paper is damp or soaked you have a leaky toilet.

I don’t know if it’s an emergency, will you still come out?

If you are worried about a problem that you may have we will come out to put your mind at ease.

I have a leak, what should I do?

Most houses will have a stop cock under the kitchen sink, if your stop cock isn’t located there it could be in another cupboard, under the stairs or outside your home.  Once you find your stop cock you will want to turn it clockwise to stop the water flow in your home.  Next call us and we can come out and help.

How do I reset my boiler?

On the front of your boiler, you should have a reset button or thermostat control nob.

My pipes are frozen, what should I do?

If your pipes freeze turn off the water supply to your home by adjusting the stop cock.  Once the water has stopped flowing into your home you will need to open up the tap to the frozen pipe, this will allow the water that is inside to thaw out.  Next, you should put some hot water bottles around the pipe to warm it up.  If you need help please get in touch.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

If a pipe burst, first find your stop cock and turn it clockwise.  Next, turn all the other taps on in the house to drain all the water in your system.  Cover the area where the pipe has burst with towels to soak up the water to minimise the chance of water damage.  You will want to turn off all the electricity in your home if the water has leaked near an electric outlet.
