It’s estimated that the average family will spend between £400 and £500 per year on water bills so it’s really in your best interest to try and cut these bills down.
In this article, we will take a look at some of the ways in which you can reduce your water bills and energy consumption.
Tip 1 – Install a water meter
One of the best ways on cutting down on your water usage is to install a water meter. A water meter only bills you for the actual water that you use and for most families or couples this isn’t as much as is estimated. For the average person, a water meter could cut your bills up-to £100 per year.
Tip 2 – Use low flow fixtures
When designing and installing your bathroom you could choose to install low flow fixtures which leaves a smaller amount of water out that usual. This then uses up less water and saves you on your bills and the amount of energy used.
Low flow fixtures can be used for taps, showerheads, and toilets to limit the amount of water that is released through the fixtures. When purchasing a bathroom be sure to ask the salesperson about energy saving fixtures and the savings your family could make if purchased.
Tip 3 – Fix leaks
Leaking taps over the course of the year can cause a lot of damage to your home, but even worse it will also waste 1000’s of liters of water which you will be charged for. If you suspect a leak in your home we would highly recommend calling a plumber.
Small leaks if left will damage your home and if you suspect more water is being used than you have actually used it could be the case that you have a leak somewhere in your home.
Tip 4 – Take a shower
Everyone loves a bath after a hard day at work but if you want to save money and the environment taking a shower is better as it uses up far less water.
Although the cost per liter between a bath and a shower is small, over the course of a year it can soon add up. If you have a small to medium-sized family this cost is amplified.
Tip 5 – Buy a dishwasher
As you may have guessed by now, letting the tap run is a great way of wasting water and money. A dishwasher unlike a running tap only uses a set amount of water which long term makes a huge difference to your water usage and energy consumption.
Reducing your water bills while saving the planet can be as easy as following and implementing the tips above, it doesn’t take much effort either to implement these changes and long term your pockets will see the difference.
