How to unblock an outside drain

drain blockage

If your sink is draining slowly or the water in your toilet rises when you flush, there is a good chance that you have a blockage in your drain.

The drain is vital when it comes to transporting waste from your home to the sewer, so when this becomes blocked you could have a major plumbing emergency on your hands.

Blocked outside drain

A blocked drain outside can cause all types of nasty problems and determining what caused the blockage can be a problem in its self. Drains can get clogged with:

  • Nappies
  • Wet wipes
  • Condoms
  • Tampons
  • Fats and Oils
  • Hair
  • Leaves
  • Silt
  • Debris

As you can see there are a wide range of items that can block your drain, so in order to unblock your drain you are going to have to find out what objects are causing the obstruction, only then will you know how to fix the problem.

Unblocking the drain

To find out what is blocking your outside drain you are going to need the following items:

  • Gloves
  • Bin bags
  • Drain rods
  • Drain unblockers

When you have all of the above you are ready to unblock your outside drain.

Firstly you are going to need to take off the drain cover which can usually be found in your garden. Take care when opening the drain as the covers can be heavy.

Once you have your drain cover open you should observe what is happening. If no water is present or if there is water inside the pipe but it’s not draining away, you have a blockage.

If your drain is blocked, take your drain rod and insert it into the blocked pipe and push and turn the drain rod clockwise until the obstruction is moved.

When you believe you have unblocked the drain, run all the taps in your home for a few minutes to make sure the water runs through the pipes. If the water flows through you have unblocked your drain, congratulations, but your job isn’t over yet.

Pour an external drain block liquid down the drain to make sure that theres no debris, muck or grease that cause a further blockage in the future. You can use products like Mr muscle bathroom drain gel or caustic soda powder.

If your drain is still blocked though I would recommend getting in touch with a professional as they will have better tools for the job at hand.
